JAPAN

New Year 2001, Tokyo

Hello, we had a very short stay in Japan, but got a good impression of it. 'Though it was very cold, the sky was clear and the sites were heart-warming. In the middle of hi-tech and neon buildings, we could find beautiful temples and shrines, a touch of the traditional Japan. Once in a while, we would meet Japanese women dressed in kimono, walking in the streets, shopping, in contrast with the youth. The majority of the last, seemed to have emerged from a cartoon or an MTV video clip. You have to see it to believe it. Then again, you could also see people wearing masks in front of their mouths and noses, probably to protect them from the germs and pollution, and a few drunken salary men. We also noticed that most of the girls walk with their feet pointed inwards, which is funny, we couldn't figure if they do it on purpose or if they are born like that! For the rest, we catched wonderful views on Mt Fuji, from a small island near Tokyo. The main problem we had, if we can call it a problem, was a problem of communication. We haven't had this problem in any of the other countries, most people always managed to speak some english. In Japan, on the other hand, it seems that they are totally self-sufficient, meaning that they don't need to speak english, probably. Also, they don't need to go abroad to get a western experience, because they make perfect replica's of typical restaurants and cafes, like we have them in Europe. We'll compare some of Japan with America, and we'll elaborate on this after we get some sleep... Bye for now...
